Devil's garden clearing in a rainforest. This clearing is caused by the ants living on the tree at centre. The tree is Duroia hirsuta, and the ant is Myrmelachista schumanni. Both are also known as the lemon ant tree and lemon ant respectively. The ant creates the clearing by injecting formic acid to kill the leaves of other plants. This ensures the survival of the tree on which the ants live. The name of the clearings comes from the belief that they were inhabited by evil spirits. Photographed near Iquitos, Peru.
