Iron pyrite crystals. Iron pyrite (iron disulphide, FeS2), commonly known as fool's gold, is the most abundant sulphide mineral and often occurs as cubes. In this sample, from Peru, the surfaces have striations, (striped patterns) on the crystal planes, showing the layer-by-layer mechanism by which the crystals grew. Specmen measures 6.5 centimetres high.
