Pseudomorphic crystal growth. Sample of calcite (calcium carbonate, rhomboid) crystals that have been overgrown by ironstone (grey) whilst retaining the shape of the calcite. This process, where one mineral is overgrown by another while retaining the shape of the overgrown mineral, is known as pseudomorphosis. Sample width is 7.5 centimetres.
