Decomposing pig. Diptera fly larvae on the carcass of a pig during the fresh stage of decomposition. The fresh stage occurs during the first few days following death. There are no physical signs of decomposition during this time, however homeostasis of the body has ceased, allowing the destruction of cells and organs to occur through enzyme action (autolysis). Substances produced during this stage attract a variety of insects that lay their eggs on the body, which hatch into the larvae seen here.
