Eel life-cycle, artwork. Eels (Anguilla sp.) spend most of their lives in freshwater, but adults (top right) migrate to the sea to spawn. After spawning the adults die. The eggs they laid hatch into larvae (bottom left), which drift in the sea back towards the coast. The larvae metamorphosis into young eels, known as glass eels (bottom right), and begin to migrate up freshwater streams.
