Louis David Riel (1844-1885), during his treason trial in 1885. Riel was the leader of the Canadian Metis, who traced their descent to mixed European and Native American parentage. During the Northwest Rebellion of 1885, Riel established the Provisional Government of Saskatchewan, which declared its independence from Canada. He was found guilty of treason and executed.
