The Sickles-Key murder case was a national sensation. Harper's Weekly printed a copy of Mrs. Sickles' written confession to her husband which described her numerous rendezvous with her lover, Philip Barton Key. A few days later, February 27, 1859, when Key attempted to contact Teresa, Sickles shot him twice, aiming one shot at Key's groin.
