Hippocrates (on right) and Galen. Where Hippocrates touches the rosebush it flowers, whereas Galen's side is nothing but thorns. By the 17th century, the more empirically oriented Hippocrates was regarded as superior to the more theoretical Galen. Engraving from a 1677 German print in DE MORBO ATTONITO LIBER UNUS, by Justus Cortnumm.
