Optical false-colour CCD image of the elliptical galaxy M105 (NGC 3379). The colour code runs from yellow for the brightest optical regions to green. M105 is a typical elliptical galaxy. Their common feature is the absence of interstellar gas which is necessary for the formation of new stars. Due to this the star population is dominated by old yellow and red stars giving elliptical galaxies a yellow-red appearance. This image was taken at the Whipple Observatory, Arizona.
