Dr Carl Reber, Project Scientist for NASA's Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS). This photograph was taken outside the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, USA, where over 40 spacecraft have been designed and built. Goddard also serves as the central data acquisition and processing organisation for these and other satellites. UARS is designed to investigate the mechanisms controlling the structure and variability of the Earth's upper atmosphere. With a design life of 18 months, UARS is currently manifested for launch in November 1991. In the background is an Honest John-Nike sounding rocket belonging to the Goddard Museum.
