Charles Dodgson or Lewis Carroll. Portrait of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-98), British mathe- matician and amateur photographer better known as the author Lewis Carroll. An academic staff member of Oxford University from 1855, Dodgson wrote sev- eral mathematical treatises, including Euclid and his Modern Rivals. In 1865 he published his first work of fiction, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, after which Dodgson began a prolific career as a novelist. He also achieved fame as an early photo- grapher, taking portraits of famous personalities. He also took pictures of young girls, including some posing naked. Criticism of this activity led him to give up photography in 1880.
