Carr Bridge at night in winter. This packhorse stone bridge crosses the River Dulnain at Carrbridge, in the Highlands region of Scotland. It was built in 1717 by General George Wade (1673-1748) as part of a military road. Packhorse bridges generally have low or non-existent parapets to accommodate the passage of the panniers on the packhorses. This bridge, however, is in a partially ruined state, having been heavily damaged in a large flood that hit the region in 1828. Car Bridge is said to be the oldest stone bridge in the Highlands.
