Cobra lily (Arisaema nepenthoides) flower. This flower consists of a hood (spathe, upper centre) that protects the spadix (white, centre). The spadix is used to attract insect pollinators to the plant using its shape and the production of an attractant odour. The insects fall into a chamber at the bottom of the flower, where the plant's reproductive organs are. They are trapped in the chamber by downward pointing hairs, until the plant is pollinated. After pollination, these hairs wither, enabling the insects to escape.
