Natives of New Guinea. 17th century artwork of three men from the Bismarck Archipelago, New Guinea, paddling an outrigger canoe. The canoe has ornate bow and stern carvings, and the man at left is using a conch shell as a trumpet. Dutch text is across bottom. This drawing was made during the 1642-1643 voyage made by the Dutch navigator and explorer Abel Tasman (1603-1659), and financed by the Dutch East India Company (VOC). This archipelago had first been visited by the Dutch explorer Willem Schouten in 1616. This sketch by Tasman is from a book published in the Netherlands in the 1670s.
