Schweinfurth, who was born in what is now Latvia, carried out work in East and Central Africa on botany, zoology and ethnology, as well as mapping the geography and river systems of the region. He discovered the Welle River (Uele River) that is now known to be part of the Congo system. His major achievements were in ethnology, detailed in his book 'Im Herzen von Afrika' (The Heart of Africa, 1874).
