Fossilised prehistoric hominid bones. Fossilised foot bones of an Australopithecus sp. hominid primate next to a plaster cast made to show how the foot would have looked. These bones were found at the Sterkfontein caves in South Africa. Numerous early hominid remains have been found at these caves, which were declared a World Heritage Site in 2000. The discovery of these particular remains led researchers to find a complete Australopithecus skeleton, thought to be around 4.7 million years old, encased in rock deep in the caves. The papers are a copy of the original science paper detailing their discovery and contain an anatomical drawing of the foot.
