Winslow Upton (1853-1914), US astronomer. Upton studied at Brown University, and then studied and worked as an assistant at the Mitchell Observatory (University of Cincinnati) and Harvard College Observatory. By 1883, he had returned to Brown University to the position of professor of astronomy, in which post he remained until his death. At Brown University, he oversaw the building of the Ladd Observatory. He participated in six eclipse expeditions, and also carried out surveying and meteorological work. Upton also observed sunspots, meteors, comets and asteroids. This image is from volume 22 (1914) of the US magazine Popular Astronomy.
