Seth Carlo Chandler (1846-1913), US astronomer. Chandler's work in astronomy started in his last year at high school when he did work at the Harvard College Observatory. He then worked on the US Coast Survey program, where similar methods to those used in astronomy. Chandler is best known for his work as an amateur astronomer. This included many years work on what is called the Chandler wobble, a small movement of the Earth's axis caused by its spin. Chandler also worked on variable stars. He was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1896. This image is from volume 22 (1914) of the US magazine Popular Astronomy.
