Hornet robber fly (Asilus crabroniformis) on dried animal dung. This insect, the largest European robber fly, breeds in cow pats and other dung. Robber flies use their long proboscis to inject their prey with neurotoxins and saliva containing digestive enzymes. This paralyses their victim and digests their insides, allowing the robber fly to suck out the liquefied meal. Photographed in Italy.
