Dead sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) on a beach, with people looking at it. The teeth, dorsal fin and penis are seen in this image. This whale washed up on Balmedie Beach near Aberdeen, in the Grampian Region of Scotland. The whale is lying on its left side. It is approximately 10 metres long, and weighed around 25 tons. A sperm whale's teeth, also known as whale ivory, only develop in its lower jaw. The teeth are not thought to be needed for feeding, and may be used in fights between males. Photographed in October.
