Artwork of the Spanish conquistador and explorer Vasco Nunez de Balboa (1475-1519) claiming possession of the Pacific Ocean and all adjoining lands for Spain in 1513. Balboa was the first European to reach the Pacific coast of South America, after travelling across the Isthmus of Panama. Previously, in 1510, Balboa had founded the first permanent European settlement on mainland America, naming it Santa Maria la Antigua del Darien.
