Jaw bone surgery. Infected tissue excised during an operation on a fractured lower jaw bone (mandible). The mandible had been operated on previously during surgery for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). However, the patient sustained a fracture of the mandible while eating. The surgeons found infection at the fracture site, which was washed out and debris removed. New screws were inserted and the jaw fixed for six weeks to allow healing. OSA is a condition where airway obstruction and soft tissue collapse causes breathing to be interrupted while sleeping.
