Magnetism experiment. Historical artwork of iron filings being carefully scattered on a piece of paper above a horseshoe magnet. The iron filing will align to the magnet's magnetic field, showing the field lines that converge at the magnet's north and south pole. Magnetic fields were mapped as early as 1269, but it was in the 19th century that magnetic fields were first successfully modelled and understood.
