Microscopes. Historical artwork of a range of microscopes and associated equipment. Six optical microscopes are shown here, together with tools used to handle samples. At lower centre are two smaller devices, also used to provide a magnified view of a sample, but less powerful than the larger microscopes. Optical microscopy developed in the 17th century as glass manufacturing and lens quality improved. Over the following centuries, a wide range of microscope designs were developed.
