Common water boatman (Notonecta glauca), artwork. This aquatic freshwater insect is widespread in the UK. It is also known as a backswimmer because it swims upside-down on the surface of the water. It is a predator, feeding on small aquatic animals such as tadpoles, small fish and invertebrates.
