Fallout shelter sign in the USA dating from the 1960s and the Cold War era (1947-1991) of tension between the USA and the USSR. A fallout shelter was designed to shelter its occupants from the effect of radioactive fallout in the aftermath of a nuclear strike. It would be stocked with food and water and other supplies to allow people to survive until radiation had fallen to safe levels. Photographed in Oregon.
