Mosquito larva (Culex sp.). At the end of the abdomen (right) is a breathing siphon that ends in a spiracle. This is held out of the water to allow the larva to breathe. The mosquito's larval stage lasts for between 1 to 2 weeks. During this time the larva lives underwater, feeding on algae and detritus.
