Mealybug (family Pseudococcidae) on a leaf in a tropical rainforest. The mealybugs are unarmoured scale insects that lack an exoskeleton. Like other scale insects, they secrete a waxy coating for defence. This, combined with the varied morphology from nymph to adult stages, and between males and females, leads to a wide variation in their appearance. Photographed in Ecuador.
