Wild West covered wagons. Simulated old photograph of covered wagons on the Oregon trail. Covered wagons, or Prairie schooners, are icons of the American Old West. They were adapted from farm wagons and typically used to transport people or goods across short distances. However, in the mid 19th century thousands of American settlers, ranchers, farmers and miners used them to travel across the Great Plains to Oregon Country, using the Oregon Trail, one of the main overland migration routes.
