Large Skipper. One of the largest of our 'golden' skippers. A fast-moving butterflies usually seen darting at high speed over rough grassland. Skippers are unique in the way that they hold their wings when at rest; front wings swept back and held at an angle above the rear wings. Photographed at Martin Down on the Dorset Hampshire border. This males shows the distinctive sex brand (the prominent dark bar) on its forewings containing specialised scent scales. There is some debate about the latin name, it was generally known as Ochlodes venata but is more correctly referred to as Ochlodes sylvanus.
