Mite-infected bee. Young worker bee (superfamily Apoidea) emerging from a brood cell with a mite (red) on its back. The Varroa mite is an external parasite of the honeybee (Apis mellifera). It feeds on both the brood and adults within a colony, and is the vector of many bee viruses. It is a major pest of commercial bee colonies.
