Northwest Pakistan. Baltit Fort was the seat of the Hunzakut royal family until 1950's and was then abandoned. It was restored between 1992 and 1996 and is now a museum. The earliest parts of the building, according to radiocarbon tests conducted during restoration work date back to the first half of the thirteenth century and it is clear that the structure has presided over the old road for centuries. Its a wooden construction, distinctly Tibetan in appearence, has allowed the structure to survive the region's frequent earthquakes and to facilitate the rapid repair of damage inflicted by successive waves of invaders.
