A Himba woman milks a cow in the stock enclosure close to her home. Traditional milk containers made from hollowed wood are preferred to their modern equivalents. The bodies of Himba women gleam from a mixture of red ochre, butterfat and herbs. Their long hair is styled in the traditional Himba way and is crowned with a headdress made of lambskin, called erembe. Her large, round necklace, studded with white beads, is called ombwari and is worn by both sexes. The Himba are Herero-speaking Bantu nomads who live in the harsh, dry but starkly beautiful landscape of remote northwest Namibia.
