A Himba mother moves to get her baby son comfortable in a leather baby carrier on her back. Their bodies gleam from a mixture of red ochre, butterfat and herbs. The mother's long hair is styled in the traditional Himba way and is crowned with a headdress made of lambskin, called erembe. All her garments are made of leather. Most married women wear a large conch shell, ohumba, between their breasts. These prized possessions are traded from Angola and are passed down from mother to daughter. Both Himba sexes also wear a round, white-beaded necklace, known as ombwari. The Himba are Herero-speaking Bantu nomads who live in the harsh, dry but starkly beautiful landscape of remote northwest Namibia.Purros
