A Himba mother and child in traditional attire. Their bodies gleam from a mixture of red ochre, butterfat and herbs. The woman's long hair is styled in the traditional Himba way and is crowned with a headdress made of lambskin, which is called erembe. Her son already wears a small round necklace of white beads, called ombwari, which will become larger and heavier as he grows older. The Himba are Herero-speaking Bantu nomads who live in the harsh, dry but starkly beautiful landscape of remote northwest Namibia. Purros
