A typical street scene in the fishing village of Kisingitini, a natural harbour on Pate Island. Almost all the houses there are constructed of coral rag or from coral blocks with thatch made from coconut palm fronds, known as makuti. With no roads or cars on the island, donkeys are rode and used to carry loads. Kisingitini is the centre of the island's fishing industry with crayfish being the fishermen's prized catch. The island is the largest of the Lamu Archipelago lying in the Indian Ocean just north of Lamu and 150 miles north-northeast of Mombasa.
