A herd of graceful impala antelopes (Aepyceros melampus) graze beneath yellow-barked 'fever trees' (Acacia xanthophloea) in Lake Nakuru National Park. Nineteenth-century European explorers gave the tree its nickname because it flourishes in places of high groundwater, which attracts mosquitoes. The link between 'fever' - in fact, malaria - and mosquitoes was not recognized until the 1880's.
