The Turkana families living near the seasonal Kerio River build their houses on stilts. This innovative style is found nowhere else in Turkanaland but suits the conditions at Lokori where the friable soil becomes a quagmire in heavy rain. It has the added advantage of lessening termite infestation and increasing air circulation, thus reducing the risk of malaria where the cerebral strain is endemic.
