Two smartly dressed Dassanech men stand on a bank of the Omo River. Their attire signifies that they are about to marry. Note the oryx horns they are carrying in which they keep their ostrich feathers for adorning their clay hairdos. The Omo Delta of southwest Ethiopia is one of the least accessible and least developed parts of East Africa. As such, the culture, social organization, customs and values of the people have changed less than elsewhere. The Dassanech speak a language of Eastern Cushitic origin. They practice animal husbandry and fishing as well as agriculture. B0014P 0236 Nigel Pavitt 5 20051002 5 6 193757+0300 6
