A cluster of houses in an old Konso village in southwest Ethiopia. The oldest villages date back 500 to 600 years and are fortified with huge dry-stone walls. All the thatched roofs are topped with earthenware pots to keep out rain. The leaves of the pale green trees surrounding the houses are edible and used as a boiled vegetable. The Konso people are very industrious farmers, cultivating poor soil on terraces, which are buttressed with dry-stone walls.
