Drukyel Dzong is situated at the western extremity of the valley, about 20kms from Paro town. Until its destruction by fire in 1950, it had been the first line of defense, for centuries, against Tibetan invaders. From its ruined ramparts, Jomalhari (The mother of mountains) Bhutan's second highest peak is a magnificent sight in the mornings.
