The northern fur seal spends most of the year at sea where it mainly feeds on fish. `In early spring the mature males will establish territories. The younger bulls are not strong enough to establish territories and will stay at the edge of the breeding ground during the mating season. Due to this their fur is unscathed by territorial fights.
