Female ruby-throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) feeding whilst in flight. This bird feeds on nectar and insects. It measures up to 9 centimetres long and beats its wings from 55 to 75 times per second. The ruby-throated hummingbird migrates annually from Canada across the 800 kilometre wide Bay of Mexico to over-winter in Central America. Photographed in Maryland in September.
