Dead swiftlet, Deer Cave, Borneo. Cockroaches, beetles and other scavengers feeding on the remains of a swiftlet (family Apodidae). The scavengers devour the soft tissues such as eyes first, then continue until the entire bird is consumed, a process that is completed within 24 hours. Deer Cave in Borneo is home to millions of bats. Their droppings collect on the cave floor and build up to huge heights. The droppings support a whole ecosystem of animals, described as troglobites, that live exclusively in the darkness of the cave.
