Ringnecked parakeets mating (Psittacula krameri). The male (top) is distinguished by a black ring around his neck, whereas the female (bottom) has no neck markings. This bird feeds on buds, fruits, vegetables, nut, berries and seeds. It is a popular pet and due to escapees is now found throughout Europe, Africa, Japan and the USA. It orginated from South Asia, where populations have declined due to trapping for the pet trade. Photographed in Kent, UK, in March.
