Grey phalarope (Phalaropus fulicaria). This wader is a resident breeder in Arctic Europe, Asia and North America. It is migratory and overwinters at sea in the tropics. As well as preying on insects on-the-wing, this bird creates a whirlpool in the water by swimming in a circle. As insect and crustacean life is brought to the surface by the vortex, the grey phalarope plucks them out with its beak. Photographed in Svalbard, in the Arctic.
