Rhea (Rhea sp.). This flightless bird is found on the grassland plains of South America. It is the largest bird in the Americas reaching heights of 1.5 metres and weighing up to 26 kilograms. The rhea, which usually lives in flocks of between 20 and 30 individuals, mainly feeds on vegetation, but will also eat fruit, seeds, insects and small vertebrates. It can run at speeds up to 60 kilometres per hour, and when running it holds its long neck nearly horizontal to the ground. Photographed in Patagonia, Chile.
