South African turban shell (Turbo sarmaticus). The South African turban is a sea snail that lives on the submerged reefs of the South African seashore. Its average size is 7.5 centimetres across. The mother of pearl gloss becomes visible when the surface layer of the shell is polished away, making it highly appreciated by collectors.
