Wasp nest hanging from the underside of a leaf. The nest is made of a paperlike substance made from dead and weathered wood. The wasps chew off fine splinters of wood and mix them with saliva, which serves as glue. At the nest site, the wasps stroke these little balls of paper with their mandibles, spreading them out into thin strips which are then glued together to form the nest.
