Male great diving beetle (Dytiscus marginalis), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This aquatic beetle's long flattened hind legs are used to propel it through the water. The male has a smooth elytra (brown) and suckers on its front legs that it uses to grip the female during mating. The great diving beetle is a voracious predator, feeding on other insects, tadpoles and fish.
